Join Go Stargazing astronomer Dr Fred Stevenson for this one of a series of fascinating lectures in the Friarage Theatre at the Princess Alexandria Auditorium.
Time travel – Is it possible?
In this presentation we will consider time as the fourth dimension and introduce Einstein’s relativity theories – where different observers can agree on the value of the speed of light irrespective of their own motion!
This leads to some very strange but experimentally proven consequences – time dilation, length contraction and mass increase as speed increases. We will also consider time travel – is it, or will it ever be possible?
We will discuss the famous ‘twins paradox’ – where it may be possible to travel to the future! However, in modern astronomy and cosmology – looking out in distance = looking back in time – looking into the past – we can look but will probably never be able to travel back in time – we will discuss the reasons why.
