Join Go Stargazing astronomer Dr Fred Stevenson for this one of a series of fascinating lectures in the Friarage Theatre at the Princess Alexandria Auditorium.
Cities of Stars – the Milky Way and other galaxies – the building blocks of the universe.
Stars swarm in huge collections known as galaxies which define the large-scale structure of our universe. The Sun is one star amongst at least one hundred thousand million that make up our Milky Way galaxy.
We will discuss how astronomers discovered the structure of own galaxy from observations of the Milky Way in the night sky and then go on to talk about the discovery of others beyond our own.
We now know that there are as many galaxies ‘out there’ as there are stars within our own galaxy – that is a lot to talk about!
