Join Go Stargazing astronomer Dr Fred Stevenson for this one of a series of fascinating lectures in the Friarage Theatre at the Princess Alexandria Auditorium.
How do we know that the universe is expanding? – Hubble’s greatest discoveries.
It was the great 20th century astronomer Edwin Hubble who discovered the nature of the galaxies. He then went on to make his most astounding discovery – that the farther away a galaxy is from us then the faster it is receding from us – the whole universe appears to be expanding!
This has led on to our modern ideas in cosmology – the study of the universe as a whole – and the so-called ‘big-bang’ theory. In this talk we will show how Hubble achieved all of this and discuss the evidence for a ‘big-bang’.
