Sherwood Observatory

Sherwood Observatory is situated between the towns of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, and Mansfield.

Low educational outcomes in these communities reduce the chances for residents to gain the STEM qualifications required for high-skilled, well-paid jobs that can enhance life opportunities, health, and regional economic growth.

Sherwood Observatory is committed to addressing this gap, driven by a belief that it is a lack of opportunity, not talent, that causes this disparity. Our young people deserve access to enriching extracurricular activities, often accessible only in more affluent areas.

In 2014, we acquired the land adjacent to the observatory, which houses a disused brick-vaulted underground Victorian reservoir built in the 1880s.

The goal is to transform this site into a Science Discovery Centre (SDC) and Planetarium. By offering engaging and educational experiences, we aim to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers, helping local people realise their potential while supporting job creation and economic prosperity in the region.
