Women in Astronomy

Women in Astronomy

Thursday 26th June 2025 from 18:30pm to 19:30pm

Dark Space Planetarium
St Mary Street, Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbrightshire, DG6 4EG

Women have made many significant contributions to astronomy throughout its history, and their work has helped to advance our knowledge. This has included the discovery of a new planet in our Solar System, the development of the Hubble Space Telescope allowing astronomers to look back to the beginning of the Universe, and the discovery of the strangest material in the Universe – Dark Matter.

Join Mike Alexander as he explores the contributions made to astronomy by women, and talks about the first female Scottish Astronomer Royal – Catherine Heymans.

Please note that this has already taken place on 26/06/2025

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
