Meteorites with Mike Alexander

Meteorites with Mike Alexander

Thursday 16th October 2025 from 18:30pm to 19:30pm

Dark Space Planetarium
St Mary Street, Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbrightshire, DG6 4EG

Did you know that pre-Iron Age people such as the ancient Greeks and Egyptians venerated and even used meteorite metal? Our understanding of meteorites has developed over the centuries and is still as important today.

Join Mike Alexander as he discusses the origin of meteorites and what they can tell us about the early Solar System. He will also have some meteorite samples available for you to look at.

Please note that this has already taken place on 16/10/2025

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
