Join South West London Stargazers for a Spectacular Partial Solar Eclipse!

On Tuesday 12 August, we’ll have the chance to witness a deep partial solar eclipse from London, with the Moon covering an impressive 91.43% of the Sun at maximum eclipse. While a total eclipse will only be visible from parts of Spain and the far North Atlantic, this will still be one of the most dramatic solar eclipses visible from the UK in many years.

We’ll be gathering on Tooting Common, near the Dr Johnson Avenue car park and bus stop, to observe the eclipse safely together.

Eclipse timings (London):
• First contact: 6:17 pm
• Maximum eclipse: 7:13 pm
• Eclipse ends: 8:06 pm

Although the Sun will not be completely covered here, you may notice the daylight becoming slightly dimmer and the temperature dropping a little as the eclipse reaches its peak. Most importantly, weather permitting, we’ll be able to watch the Moon slowly move across the face of the Sun and experience the changing light of this remarkable celestial event.

We’ll have safe viewing equipment available, including:
• A telescope fitted with a Baader solar filter for close-up views of the eclipsed Sun.
• Plenty of certified solar eclipse glasses for everyone attending.

If you have your own safe solar observing equipment, please feel free to bring it along. We’d be especially delighted to see any specialist solar telescopes capable of observing the Sun in hydrogen-alpha wavelengths, revealing features such as prominences and other solar activity invisible in ordinary white-light views.

Whether you’re a seasoned observer or have never seen a solar eclipse before, come along and share this memorable astronomical event with fellow stargazers. Fingers crossed for clear skies! ☀️🌙🔭

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
