Dark Skies in the Past and Today – an International Workshop hosted by the School of Divinity, History, Philosophy and Art History at University of Aberdeen

This multidisciplinary workshop explores the importance of dark skies, drawing on Scotland’s unique areas of low light pollution and connections with similar regions in Canada. Bringing together perspectives from the humanities, sciences, policy, and community knowledge, the event will examine how dark skies have influenced human culture and scientific understanding, as well as the environmental, legal, and ethical challenges posed by light pollution. Hosted by the University of Aberdeen with hybrid participation available, the workshop is open to academics, students, policymakers, and the public, and is intended as the first in a series of events focused on dark skies past and present.
