The Chesterfield Astronomical Society is a long-established, volunteer-run group dedicated to promoting interest in astronomy among its members and the wider community.

Central to its activities is the society’s observatory, which provides a permanent base for observing sessions, meetings, and public outreach events. Equipped with telescopes and other astronomical instruments, the observatory allows members to study the Moon, planets, stars, and deep-sky objects, while also offering newcomers a practical introduction to observing the night sky.

Through regular talks, observing nights, and educational events, the society and its observatory play an important role in fostering curiosity and understanding of astronomy in the Chesterfield area.

Regular meetings with Chesterfield Astronomical Society

  • Chesterfield Barnett Observatory open evening (visitors welcome)

Friday every week from January 2026 to December 2026

Chesterfield Barnett Observatory, Chesterfield, S41 8RH

Visitors are welcome to join the friendly and enthusiastic members of the Chesterfield Astronomical Society at this informal observing session at their observatory which occurs every Friday throughout the year.

The session starts at 8 pm and finishes when the last person leaves, usually around 9:30 pm; however, it can go on until much later, especially during the Summer months when the skies do not darken until later.

Visitors are welcome for just a small charge of £2 per adult (children under 16 are free) to help with costs. If the weather is favourable, you'll be shown cool objects in the night sky through their large telescope in the dome.

There is no need to book -- just pop in if the weather looks good!
