The Bedford Astronomical Society (BAS), founded in January 1987 by a small group of astronomy enthusiasts, has grown to around 100 members of all ages and skill levels. The Society holds monthly meetings on the last Wednesday, featuring informal gatherings, talks by prominent speakers, and discussions on diverse topics such as the universe's origins, star naming, meteorites, and Apollo missions. Membership grants access to all BAS events, presentations, and talks, organised by members and guest speakers throughout the year.

  • Piazzi Smyth Observatory observing session

    Wednesday every week from October 2025 to April 2026

    Piazzi Smyth Observatory, Bedford, MK40 2LD

    Join friendly astronomers from the Bedford Astronomical Society for an evening of observing at Bedford School's Piazzi Smyth Observatory. The facility houses a large 16" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope that offers fantastic views.

    These events are held every Wednesday between October and April and go ahead only when the weather is clear -- check the group's Twitter feed for announcements. These sessions are for those interested in learning more about the Society and possibly becoming members.

    Note that there may not be an observing session on the last Wednesday of each month if the group hosts one of their regular speaker meetings.
