In March 2023, Hawnby became the first village in the United Kingdom to commit to dark sky-friendly lighting. The scheme will see more than 100 lights on 30 properties converted, including the village hall and local pub, helping protect the great starry skies above the North York Moors Dark Sky Reserve and demonstrating to other communities how straightforward it is to take a similar approach. Read more about this scheme on the BBC website.
