Dark sky stargazing at the North Pennines Observatory

Dark sky stargazing at the North Pennines Observatory

Sunday 26th October 2025 from 20:00pm to 22:00pm

North Pennines Observatory
The Old School House, Allenheads, Northumberland, NE47 9HR

Step beneath one of the darkest night skies in England and witness the Milky Way in all its glory. From the Allenheads Observatory at ACA, located in one of the darkest skies in the country, you will discover a stargazer’s paradise where the universe truly comes alive.

Because of its breathtaking views and immersive activities, this signature stargazing experience often sells out well in advance.

For two unforgettable hours, expert astronomers will guide you through the cosmos. Using telescopes, binoculars, and naked-eye tours, they will help you spot constellations, planets, star clusters, and deep-sky wonders you never knew existed. Along the way, you will explore the night sky’s secrets, handle museum-standard meteorites around 4.6 billion years old, ask burning space questions, and take part in hands-on astronomy activities.

Meanwhile, you can warm up with hot drinks and snacks in our cosy indoor space between observing sessions.

This event takes place as part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival 2025.

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
