Informal stargazing at Wynyard Planetarium and Observatory

Join the friendly team at Wynyard Planetarium and Observatory for a relaxed, informal evening exploring astronomy.

These free drop-in sessions take place every Tuesday evening throughout the stargazing season, from September to April. They are suitable for everyone, from complete beginners to experienced stargazers, and there is no need to book — simply drop in at any time between 7:30pm and 9:00pm.

If the skies are clear, head outside and enjoy views of the night sky through the observatory’s telescopes, with knowledgeable volunteers on hand to help you find your way around the stars.

The sessions take place whatever the weather. If it is cloudy, the planetarium provides a warm and welcoming place to congregate, take a look around, chat with the team and ask questions about astronomy and the night sky.

You are also welcome to bring along your own telescope if you need help setting it up or learning how to use it. If you are thinking of buying a telescope, the volunteers can offer friendly, impartial advice on choosing suitable equipment for your interests and budget, including what to look for and what to avoid.

Please note that these are informal drop-in evenings rather than scheduled planetarium shows.

Admission is free and no advance booking is required.
