Salford Astronomical Society is run by a group of volunteers, including amateurs and enthusiasts, that all have one thing in common -- a passion for astronomy.

The group operate a wonderful observatory in the heart of Salford, which houses a magnificent 18.5’’ reflector telescope, donated to the people of Salford by Jodrell Bank Observatory in 1961.

Regular meetings with Salford Astronomical Society

  • Salford Observatory open evening

Wednesday every week from January 2024 to December 2024

Salford Observatory, Chasely Fields, M6 7DZ

The friendly and welcoming astronomers from the Salford Astronomical Society open their fantastic observatory on Wednesday evenings of most weeks throughout the whole year. These events occur no matter the weather, with presentations taking place if the skies are cloudy.

The observatory is home to an incredible 18" aperture reflecting telescope, and the Society renovated the facility in 2020 with a new warm room and projector screen.

The observatory offers solar viewing through the summer months and may stay open for longer each evening if the skies are clear.

Note that on the second Wednesday of each month between September and April the observatory is closed as the Society meets at Swinton Gateway for their public lecture evening.

A visit is highly recommended! Clear skies!
