Experience the River Cities of France and Portugal with Fred. Olsen Cruises and Go Stargazing
Wednesday 8th May 2024 to Thursday 23rd May 2024
Departing from Newcastle Cruise Terminal
Port of Tyne, Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, NE29 6EE
This cruise uncovers historic battles from Norman invasion to Age of Discovery on a cultural journey to France and Portugal. Explore Château Boutinet’s wine history and how to make pastéis de nata. Scenic highlights include the Tower of Hercules and River Seine villages en route to Rouen, a journey only possible on smaller ships.
In addition, you’ll be joined aboard by an experienced astronomer from Go Stargazing for guided night sky tours under light pollution-free skies as part of Fred. Olsen’s Sky at Sea signature experience.
- Learn how our ancestors interpreted the sky with a laser-guided tour of the constellations.
- During this cruise, the longer days mean darkness falls later in the evening. However, there will be beautiful views of the crescent Moon setting in the dusk twilight at sunset.
- Observe the phase of the Moon change throughout the cruise. The Moon’s craters and mountain ranges look stunning through binoculars! And it may be possible to view some rare clair-obscure effects, including the Lunar X, Lunar V and the “Eyes of Clavius” at the half-Moon phase.
- This cruise takes place just after the peak of the Eta Aquarids meteor shower, meaning an increased chance of seeing shooting stars.
Please note that this has already taken place on 08/05/2024
The map plots the course of this cruise. As you travel away from light pollution, a breathtaking canvas of stars unfolds above. The sky becomes a sanctuary of twinkling constellations, captivating stargazers with its celestial wonders. Guided by a Go Stargazing astronomer, you'll learn to navigate the skies and immerse yourself in their beauty.
