Join members of Chipping Norton Amateur Astronomy Group for this public event timed to coincide with BBC Stargazing Live 2017. Observe the night sky through a wide range of powerful telescopes in the company of experienced astronomers.

The setting for this event is the the Rollright Stones Ancient Monument which has been recognised for its dark skies having been awarded Dark Sky Discovery site status.

This event is free of charge and weather permitting — no booking is required so just turn up!  If the weather is cloudy the event will be relocated indoors to the nearby Long Compton Village Hall where there will be talks and exhibits from 18:00pm to 22:00pm.

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
