Stargazing Night Walk along the Old Military Road

Stargazing Night Walk along the Old Military Road

Saturday 31st August 2024 from 21:45pm to 23:30pm

Tomintoul & Glenlivet Discovery Centre
The Square, Tomintoul, Banffshire, AB37 9ET

Would you like to learn more about the night sky? Have you ever been night walking on Glenlivet Estate? Come and join the dark-side! Join Cairngorms Astronomy Group and Tomintoul & Glenlivet Development Trust for a guided walk along the Old Military Road in the Tomintoul & Glenlivet Cairngorms Dark Sky Park. September is a great time of year to view the Milky Way and we’ll look at stars, planets, and constellations and share resources for improving your celestial knowledge.

The Glenlivet and Tomintoul area is one of the best places in the Cairngorms National Park to discover the wonders of the night sky. It is Scotland’s second International Dark Sky Park and the most northerly in the UK.

Please note that there are no toilets or facilities on site but parking is available at the Glenlivet Estate Office. Please dress appropriately for late summer conditions and changeable weather. Sturdy waterproof shoes, lots of layers, along with gloves and hat will make your stargazing experience more enjoyable.

In the event of inclement weather attendees will be emailed with updates on the day.

Suggested donation £5 on the night helps to support the Tomintoul & Glenlivet Cairngorms Dark Sky Park.

Please note that this has already taken place on 31/08/2024

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
