Stargazing at Mussenden Temple

Stargazing at Mussenden Temple

Friday 25th August 2023 from 19:00pm to 23:00pm

Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne - National Trust
Mussenden Road, Castlerock, County Londonderry, BT51 4RP

Say goodbye to summer skies at this stargazing event organised by the National Trust in collaboration with the Northern Ireland Amateur Astronomy Society.

The night starts at Mussenden Temple with a Bat Experience, learning all about the magnificent nocturnal mammals with local bat expert Karen Healy, before heading out to search for them in their natural habitat in the Bishop’s Gate Arboretum.

As we return to Downhill House we are hosted by Northern Ireland Amateur Astronomy Society, hearing from the experts on what we can see and experience on the dark skies , all this while having a cup of warm chocolate from our very own resident Al’s Coffee Bar.

Please note that this has already taken place on 25/08/2023

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
