St Andrews Observatory Open Night

St Andrews Observatory Open Night

Wednesday 2nd December 2020 from 19:00pm to 21:00pm

St Andrews Observatory
University of St Andrews, St Andrews, KY16

The St Andrews Observatory, home to the James Gregory Telescope, is opened to the public by St Andrews University every first Wednesday of the month, 7-9pm, independent of the weather. This is a chance to see the biggest telescope in the country in action, particularly recommended when the night is clear and the JGT is producing images. The University guarantees that an astronomer will be at hand to give a tour and answer questions. These events are in addition to the regular weekly Thursday night events organised by the St Andrews University Astronomical Society.

Please note that this event has already taken place on 02/12/2020

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
