Spooky Space Halloween Stargazing

Spooky Space Halloween Stargazing

Wednesday 31st October 2018 from 19:00pm to 22:00pm

High Forest Community Centre
High Sinderhope, Hexham, NE47 9SS

Join local astronomer Joe Gordon for an evening looking at spooky space!

First fright – we will be wondering about the ancient sacred festivals of Halloween and the origins of spirits and fairies.

Second scare – we will look at where the Earth is in its orbit around the sun today and why that is important. Joe will need some volunteers to help out especially if they happen to be wearing a spooky outfit.

Third terror – see what we can identify in the night sky tonight. Are the lights in the sky spirits and fairies or are they planets, remnants of exploded stars or galaxies millions of light years away.

Weather permitting we will do some stargazing as part of the evening. Feel free to bring your camera and tripod to capture some beautiful views of the Milky Way will be overhead in the night sky. Wrap up warm and bring a red light torch (if you have one).

Please note that this event has already taken place on 31/10/2018

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
