Solar Observing at Kenley Observatory

Solar Observing at Kenley Observatory

Saturday 17th August 2024 from 11:00am to 13:00pm

Norman Fisher Observatory at Kenley
Near Kenley Aerodrome, Kenley, Surrey, CR8 5EP

Save the date! The friendly astronomers at the Croydon Astronomical Society are hopeful to open the their Kenley Observatory for a public solar (sun) observing day this coming Saturday (17th Aug) from 11am – 1 pm (possibly longer depending on volunteers and the weather).

The sun is currently very active which means that you should see an unusually high number of sun spots. We will have some specially filtered telescopes for you to safely observe the sun. The Sun is currently very active which means that you should see an unusually high number of sun spots. We will also have some specialised Hydrogen Alpha telescopes which allow you to see another layer of the sun’s surface and, hopefully, see some of the activity that happens on its surface.

We need a good clear sun for this to work, without cloud or haze and absolutely no chance of sudden rain. Watch this page for confirmation.

Please note there is no parking on the site (we don’t own the surrounding land which is owned by working stables), there are no loos on site, and there is no charge and no need to book (though there are donation boxes!)

Please note that this has already taken place on 17/08/2024

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
