Sherwood Observatory Public Open Day - July 2022

Sherwood Observatory Public Open Day - July 2022

Saturday 30th July 2022 from 11:00am to 16:15pm

Sherwood Observatory
Near Coxmoor Golf Club, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, NG17 5LF

Join Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society members as they open their observatory for an afternoon of solar observing.

Here, you will get a chance to view the Sun via our dedicated solar telescope (weather permitting). Depending on the activity of the Sun, expect to see real-time views of the Chromosphere, where significant eruptions of solar material eject into space.

Also, there will be presentations, talks and plenty of activities for younger astronomers. The Radio Astronomy Centre will be open for visitors to learn about meteor detection and take in some live solar radio astronomy.

Prior booking is required.

Please note that this has already taken place on 30/07/2022

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
