Royal Observatory Edinburgh Autumn Open Night

Monday 17th October 2022 from 18:30pm to 19:30pm

Royal Observatory Edinburgh
Blackford Hill, Edinburgh, Midlothian, EH9 3HJ

Are you visiting Edinburgh for the first time or simply looking for an alternative night out? Are you curious about astronomy and want to find out more? Have you wondered about the science and technology behind the gates at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh?

Visit the Royal Observatory Edinburgh and enjoy a tour of the beautiful Victorian telescope dome. If the weather allows there will be time for stargazing on the flat roof but (in Scotland, this is often not possible!)

These events are suitable for all ages, with the earlier session timed for those with younger children.

Please note that this has already taken place on 17/10/2022

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
