Rosse Observatory Open Evening

Rosse Observatory Open Evening

Friday 9th April 2021 from 19:15pm to 21:15pm

Rosse Observatory
Carleton Road, Pontefract, WF8 3RJ

Everyone is invited to join members of West Yorkshire Astronomical Society for this one of their regular open evenings at Rosse Observatory. These take place every Tuesday and Friday with Tuesday evenings being primarily for members (and tend to be more formal) with Friday evenings being more social and aimed at beginners, novices and anyone interested in astronomy (younger astronomers are also welcome!).

When the skies are clear there are some great views to be had through their newly installed large reflecting telescope with a classroom area for presentations in case of cloudy weather.

There’s a small entrance fee for adults however children can attend free of charge!  These events make for a great opportunity to visit your local observatory and go stargazing!

Please do check in advance that the event is going ahead and also to confirm the start time as these can vary throughout the year and starting later in the Summer evenings.

Please note that this event has already taken place on 09/04/2021

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
