Public Stargazing in Dalby Forest - October 2022

Public Stargazing in Dalby Forest - October 2022

Friday 7th October 2022 from 20:00pm to 21:30pm

Dalby Forest Visitor Centre
Dalby Forest, Thornton-le-Dale, North Yorkshire, YO18 7LT

Scarborough & Ryedale Astronomical Society hold regular public stargazing at the Low Dalby Astronomy Centre in Dalby Forest held during the autumn and winter months.

Come and see the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies under one of the darkest skies in the country. The site of the society observatories was awarded the Milky Way Class of the UK Dark Sky Discovery Award in January 2013.

Please wrap up warm and bring along a torch (preferably with a red filter to preserve your & others’ night vision). Please avoid shining white light torches near the observatories, during the event or at others’ faces, as it will take 20 minutes for eyes to readjust to the dark. Take extra care in the car park also.

If the weather happens to be inclement, please don’t be put off. A member of the society will give a talk / virtual tour in the warmth of the Forestry Commission Visitor Centre.

The event itself is FREE; however, prior booking is required via the Eventbrite website. However, Forestry England now charges on exiting the forest – the charge will be £3 per vehicle for this event (code supplied at the event).

Please note that this has already taken place on 07/10/2022

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
