North Pennines Observatory Open Evening

North Pennines Observatory Open Evening

Saturday 27th October 2018 from 19:00pm to 22:00pm

North Pennines Observatory
The Old School House, Allenheads, NE47 9HR

In this talk local astronomer and science educator Andy Gray will explore how physics and chemistry created biology.

The atoms that make up the human body are traceable back to the stars. Andy will start with the big bang and will look to see how the atoms in us are made in the universe. You will gain an understanding of what we mean by life and then through looking at how given the conditions on Earth, the diversity of life formed here, what are the possibility for other sorts of life is likely elsewhere in the universe and will we ever hear from them.

After Andy’s talk we will do some stargazing (weather permitting). Wrap up warm and bring a red light torch (if you have one).

This event is taking place as part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival 2018.

Please note that this event has already taken place on 27/10/2018

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
