Museum of the Moon talk and stargazing at Durham Cathedral

Museum of the Moon talk and stargazing at Durham Cathedral

Tuesday 9th November 2021 from 18:30pm to 20:30pm

Durham Cathedral
North Bailey, Durham, County Durham, DH1 3EH

Join local astronomers Neill Sanders and Dr Fred from Go Stargazing and witness the incredible spectacle that is Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon in the stunning location of Durham Cathedral.

Enjoy a presentation about the Moon, the brightest object in the night sky, so bright that astronomers even consider it a source of natural light pollution!

Questions such as: ‘Why do we always see the same side of the Moon?’ and ‘Why does the Moon appear very large as it rises or sets?’, will be addressed, as well as some of the Moon’s still unsolved mysteries.

Then, weather permitting, and for those who wish to scale the 325 steps, enjoy a laser-guided tour of the night sky from atop the Cathedral tower. It may be possible to observe the planets Jupiter and Saturn through a telescope too. Whatever the weather, stunning night-time views across the City are guaranteed!

Please note that this has already taken place on 09/11/2021

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
