Magical Mystery Twilight Walk
Saturday 29th October 2022 from 16:45pm to 19:45pm
Sutton Bank Visitor Centre
Sutton Bank, Near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 2EH
From the edge of this ancient land, the vistas are simply breathtaking. On a clear day you can watch the sun set behind the Yorkshire Dales in the distance. Below are expansive, flat plains that go on as far as the eye can see. The skies here are simply huge.
It’s the most perfect place to watch day turn to night. Walk by the light of the moon. Or gaze in wonder at a sparkling, star-filled sky when it’s very dark.
But first you’ll descend down a steep hill to a lake. Cradled by ancient woodlands, this tarn was formed over 20,000 years ago. It has a depth of stillness and light which is simply magical after sunset.
Heading back to the top will be worth the effort. On clear nights you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and shimmering lights from small settlements below. See planets, constellations, shooting stars and even see the The Milky Way arcing above you. You’ll see the moon really clearly from here when it’s full too.
Of course good weather can’t be guaranteed, but even if it’s cloudy, walking at night is an incredible experience that is invigorating, immersive and good for the soul.
But this isn’t any old night walk. You’ll learn more about planet Earth and the night sky above you. And you’ll learn how to ‘fine tune’ your senses through a little mindfulness so you’ll get even more out of the experience too. The result? Your WOW-factor will be ramped up. And those worries you had earlier, may have disappeared.
Walk information
We’ll start the walk just before sunset, but it will be dark by the time we finish. The walk length is roughly 4 miles and mainly on footpaths. There are very steep hills, rough ground and mud in this walk route too. For your comfort, a good level of fitness will be needed for this activity.
This event takes place as part of the National Parks Dark Skies Fringe Festival 2022.
