How fast are you moving when sitting still?

How fast are you moving when sitting still?

Saturday 27th February 2021 from 19:00pm to 20:00pm

Online event by Go Stargazing

Dr Fred returns with a talk that will knock you off your seat! When you are sitting on the couch watching the latest Brian Cox documentary it feels like you are at rest and not actually moving. But of course we are - through space - at speeds that you may find surprising.

In Dr Fred's talk he discusses all of the motions that we, sitting fixed to the Earth, have through space from the stately rotation of our planet every 24 hours, to our orbital motion around the Sun, to the large scale galaxy motions taking us through the cosmos at surprising speed. What is the resultant speed if we add all of these motions together? Listen to the talk to find out!!

This event takes place as part of the National Parks Virtual Dark Skies Festival 2021, an annual celebration of the wonderful dark skies above the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors International Dark Sky Reserves.

Note that this online presentation can also be viewed LIVE and for FREE via the Go Stargazing public Facebook page (no Facebook login is required - you may need to refresh the page to see the "Watch live" button).
