Alston Moor Golf Club
Alston, Penrith, Cumbria, CA9 3DB

Talk and stargazing opportunity at Alston Moor Golf Club – a truly dark site in the South Tyne Valley.

The event will be led by North Pennines astronomer and astrophotographer – Gary Lintern and supported by Michael Tweedy, previous Chairman of Sunderland Astronomy Society.

An indoor presentation will take place followed by the loan of quality binoculars to see the heavens from outside (so no need to bring your own) plus viewing through a 19-inch telescope.

Indoor activities will be available if the skies are not clear. Drinks (including teas and coffee) & biscuits (charges apply to bar drinks) will be available.

This will be a packed two hours suitable for beginners to amateur stargazers. Arrivals between 6.30 and 7 pm.

Pre-booking is essential. To book contact David Hymers – [email protected]. Tickets cost £10

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
