Forest Of Stars at Hampstead Heath

Forest Of Stars at Hampstead Heath

Saturday 25th March 2023 from 16:30pm to 20:30pm

Hampstead Heath
Hampstead, London, London, NW3 2SP

A forest bathing and mindful stargazing mini-retreat on Hampstead Heath.

Rediscover a sense of belonging and connection through guided practices of wonder and awe, beginning with an immersion into our immediate environment in the forest within the city and gradually expanding further and further outwards to the edges of the Universe with certified forest bathing guide Katie Mills and mindful stargazing expert Mark Westmoquette.

First, we’ll immerse ourselves in the natural environment through guided forest bathing practices with Katie. Forest Bathing is spending intentional time with trees or in woodland settings. You’ll be guided through a series of ‘invitations’ to reconnect with nature – the nature of Hampstead Heath – touching on themes including the power of trees; nature for health; nature for happiness; and nature connection in the city.

We’ll then have a picnic together (food included). As it gets dark, we’ll begin our practice of mindful stargazing with Mark. Mindful stargazing is not about star maps or using technology. It’s about developing a first-hand, experiential knowledge of what it is to ‘be’ in this vast Universe of ours – not looking up at the stars, but realising we’re in the stars (and made of them!). You’ll be guided through a variety of meditations that will take us to the far reaches of the Universe with your feet staying firmly on the ground. Mark will finish with a tour of the constellations if it’s clear.

Note: if the weather is bad, we may have to postpone or cancel the event.

Please note that this has already taken place on 25/03/2023

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
