You are very much encouraged to take this opportunity to visit the fabulous Grade 2 listed Fernley Observatory in the wonderful location of Hesketh Park at this one of a number of public open days that take place throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to learn about the facility's history including seeing up close a rare example of a working 6 inch aperture Victorian refracting telescope made by the famous self-taught optical specialist Thomas Cooke as well as the founding astronomer Joseph Baxendale who was in 1871 was appointed 'Timekeeping Astronomer and Meteorologist for Manchester'. These events are run on a voluntary basis by proud and enthusiastic members of Southport Astronomical Society.
