Discover the Constellations at Harehope Quarry

Tuesday 23rd October 2018 from 18:00pm to 20:00pm

Harehope Quarry Project
Frosterley, Bishop Auckland, DL13 2SG

Discover the beauty of the dark skies of the North Pennines. The evening will start with an introductory indoor session using an amazing software programme that allows you to view all the wonders of the night sky in real time.

Afterwards, weather permitting, we will go out and using the naked eye, binoculars and a telescope, view some of the wonders of the universe.

The activity leader, Bruce Ferguson (from Wild North Discovery), has been a keen stargazer since the early 1970s when his interest in the night sky was inspired by the gift from his dad of his first telescope, a 3-inch refractor.

Wrap up warm and bring a red-light torch (if you have one). Not suitable for young children (under 8s).

This event is taking place as part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival 2018.

Please note that this event has already taken place on 23/10/2018

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
