Online event by Cambridge Astronomical Association
In 2019, Jodrell Bank Observatory, home to the UK’s national radio astronomy facility and host of the global HQ of the Square Kilometre Array, was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Professor Tim O’Brien will explain how and why this designation came about. The talk will feature many interesting stories from Jodrell Bank, including wartime radar, the building of the world’s largest telescopes, space tracking, the cold war, quasars, gravitational lenses, pulsars and more.
