Stargazing at Walthamstow Wetlands: Diversity and Astronomy

Stargazing at Walthamstow Wetlands: Diversity and Astronomy

Monday 9th October 2023 from 19:00pm to 21:00pm

Walthamstow Wetlands
Forest Road, London, London, N17 9NH

Join Michael from the Stow Stargazers for a talk that reflects diversity, ethnicity and inclusion in stargazing and astronomy.

Did you know that Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad song “Follow the Drinking Gourd” is said to be a star map for guiding the enslaved to freedom?

The evening will also feature an exclusive guided walk through the wetlands to view the night sky (weather permitting).

Michael will share some tips and tactics on urban stargazing in preparation for the tour.

Stow Stargazers brings people together to enjoy nature whilst experiencing the night sky. They are passionate about sharing knowledge and advice on all aspects of stargazing, learning together what is on show and giving tips for viewing the celestial sights.

Please note that this has already taken place on 09/10/2023

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
