Abingdon Astronomical Society observing evening (first clear night)

Abingdon Astronomical Society observing evening (first clear night)

Monday 28th October 2024 from 20:00pm to 23:00pm

Wootton and Dry Sandford Community Centre
Lamborough Hill, Wootton, Oxfordshire, OX13 6DA

Once a month, the Abingdon Astronomical Society holds an observing evening near the driving range at Frilford Heath Golf Club.

The Society is keen to encourage those with an interest in the night sky to look through Member’s telescopes, so if you have never looked through a telescope before this is a wonderful opportunity. If you have a telescope or binoculars you are welcome to bring them along.

This event is weather-dependent and held on a first-clear-night basis on the dates indicated. Only one session occurs in the date range; if the weather is poor on the first date, the event moves to the second date, and then to the third. Updates are given via the Society’s website, Facebook page and Twitter around 6:30 p.m each day.

See the Society’s observing page on their website to understand how this works and to join their free mailing list for notifications.

Please note that this has already taken place on 28/10/2024

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
