A telescope isn't just for Christmas - Urban Astronomy

Thursday 19th December 2019 from 20:30pm to 22:00pm

Merkinch Sea Cadets Hall
44 Kessock Road, Inverness, IV3 8AJ

A beginners guide to observing and buying a first telescope or binoculars

Are you considering a first telescope or pair of binoculars this Christmas? Are you completely new to astronomy and stargazing or wish to return to the hobby after a long break?

Come along to the next Urban Astronomy session near the Merkinch Local Nature reserve for an indoor talk on buying your first telescope – how much to spend, what to look for and perhaps more importantly what to avoid.

If conditions are clear we’ll also walk to the nature reserve for some stargazing and observing. Talk and guiding by local astronomer Stephen Mackintosh.

Please note that this event has already taken place on 19/12/2019

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
